Heinrich Schutz 's life as a court musician at Dresden became more and more restricted as all the available moneywas diverted to help with the Saxon war effort. The conflict had begun in 1618, but from 1631 onwards music making at court dwindled, so any opportunities for foreign travel provided welcome relief. Schutz began a series of trips abroad with a visit to Denmark in 1633 and did not settle again in Dresden until 1645, by which time he'd reached the age of 60 and decided he wanted to retire.
