2: Family Troubles. Heinrich Schutz had more than his fair share of family upsets and grief. The first of a long line of bereavements began with the death of his much loved wife Magdalena in 1625, leaving him with two young daughters to bring up. Schutz never remarried but busied himself with producing the Becker Psalter , a collection of part-songs based on the psalm paraphrases of the Leipzig theologian Cornelius Becker. More surprisingly, Schutz's long period of mourning also found him pushing musical frontiers forward by writing what may be the first German oratorio.

London Jazz Festival
A wonderful line-up of jazz talent in a concert which includes the premiere of a new work by Julian Joseph. In the first half, Julian Joseph and his trio are joined by two giants of the tenor saxophone -
George Coleman and Johnny Griffin. And after the interval the trio becomes a big band and is joined by the BBC Concert Orchestra with soul diva Mica Paris. Presented by Alyn Shipton and recorded last Saturday at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
