Heinrich Schütz was a major force in German 17th-century music, and regarded in high esteem throughout Europe during his lifetime. Primarily a composer of sacred music, he grew up steeped in the Lutheran tradition, but after studying in Italy with Giovanni Gabrieli he also drew upon the current Italian styles to add a warmth and vitality to his music.
