The high spots of this evening's action in the Olympic Stadium in Athens are at 7.35 with the women's 100m final followed at 7.50 by the men's 100m when the title of the world's fastest man will be decided. Olympic champion and world record holder Donovan Bailey of Canada defends his world title and is again one of the favourites, but his opposition is likely to include Frankie Fredericks and Ato Boldon, the men he beat into the minor medal positions at the Olympics. Meanwhile Denise Lewis goes in the 200m event of the heptathlon.

Tonight's Omnibus, presented by South African born novelist Justin Cartwright, has been filmed over the three years since Nelson Mandela's inauguration in 1994. From the struggle of a classical violinist in Soweto through to Venda python dance and Afrikaans accordionists, black opera singers and a surprising flop at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, Cartwright charts the colossal changes since the end of apartheid and finds some surprising answers to questions about the political changes in South Africa.
