In round two last year Stephen Lee , who would go on to reach the semi-finals, edged past compatriot and crowd favourite Jimmy White 13-11. The six-times beaten finalist had led 10-7 only for Lee to take four frames in a row.
White dug deep to snatch the 22nd frame, but it was to no avail as Lee won the final two frames of the match. Ken Doherty was involved in another close match against
Graeme Dott. At one point the Irishman was 7-2 down, but regrouped to level the tie at 12-12. A tense 42-minute decider followed, with Doherty coming up trumps to secure an unconvincing passage into the quarter-finals.
