The two first-round matches between Matthew Stevens and James Wattana , Ken Doherty and Joe Swail reach their conclusion. Last year Stevens made a decisive start, defeating Chris Small 10-3 in the first round, only to lose against Paul Hunter 13-6 in the second. Wattana was knocked out in the first by Jimmy White 10-6. From the very first round Doherty endured a series of close-fought battles, but eventually won through to the final. Swail meanwhile faired no better than Wattana, being stopped in the first by Tony Drago 10-8.
