A series of vintage rock, pop and soul performances from the BBC archives. Free to Be Me. In 1972 the favourite chat-up line at any teenage party was "doyou like heavy music?" The intellectually-inclined called it
"progressive". It only rarely appeared on singles, and it had its own TV programme - The Old Grey Whistle Test. Out of "heavy" music was eventually to come heavy metal, but first came the back-to-basics no nonsense "pub rock" that was to foreshadow punk. With performances from Free, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull , Focus, Captain Beefheart, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band and Dr Feelgood.
