In 1954 Sir Winston Churchill remarked that it was "the single most important question facing the cabinet, but I cannot get my ministers to take notice".
While the British government publicly operated an open-door policy to immigrants, in private it was terrified about the growing black population. Documents released under the 30-year rule and obtained by Timewatch reveal the government's true concerns were for interbreeding and therefore diluting the essential British character, rising crime, and health problems as immigrants came from colonies riddled with disease.
Jonathan Dimbleby hosts a debate with representatives from the government and civil service in the 50s and 60s including Enoch Powell and John Bean, a founder member of the British National Party.

When Dog and Becca meet at the _ Glastonbury Festival,
It's Crusty Love at first sight.
With his trusty hound Leggit and fellow "traveller" Captain Larry, the happy couple trade a life on the road for the relative security of a squat. But the squat becomes a home and a home, however humble, demands home improvements - and an income to support them.
Can Dog and Becca remain true to their roots? Or will colour charts and shelving units get the better of them? Peter Saimi and Carl Prechezer ' s comedy pits the hippy ideals of the New Age against the yuppy aspirations of suburbia.
Rachel Weisz , recently seen as Mathilde in Scarlet and Black, stars as Becca; Rufus Sewell
(Will Ladislaw from Middlemarch) plays her boss Clive, and Bernard Hill, making his second appearance in this season of Screen Two after Skallagrigg, plays Captain Larry.
