South Africa 1951. The African Drum is born - a magazine modelled on Life and Picture Post, but creating its own identity in reflecting the diversity of Black township life in the 50s and the impact of apartheid on a burgeoning political consciousness.
Jurgen Schadeberg was the magazine's first staff photographer and his exuberant film vividly evokes the ghosts of that era - the young Nelson Mandela ,
Miriam Makeba , Lewis Nkosi and the Nobel Peace Prize-winner Chief Albert Luthuli. It was a season of high political hopes and of a Bohemian artistic renaissance, brought vividly to life in this documentary through reminiscence and rare archival footage, underscored by recordings of original township jazz ... the story of a magazine and a chronicle of its epoch.
