In 1963, Eric and Wanda Newby drifted slowly down the Ganges. Twenty-five years later they returned to India to drive slowly up the Grand Trunk Road - from
Calcutta to Delhi. This time, their mode of transport was a bright yellow taxi. The driver was Jarnail Singh whose usual fares are entirely within Calcutta.
Delight and disaster alternate in roughly equal parts - along what Kipling called
'this river of life as nowhere else exists in the world'.
On the way they encounter musical bus passengers, elephants and, seemingly, most of the mechanics of northern India.
