Out of the Doll's House

on BBC Two England

Eight films exploring the way women's lives have changed in the 20th century. 2: Motherhood
'It's intangible. It's a love affair, but different from that with your husband.'
In the old days mothers knew their job: to feed, clothe, house their children and teach them to behave. In 1907 an alarming report on the degeneration of the British race led experts to move in and set up the first Schools for Mothers. Since then there has been no shortage of professional advice to undermine the idea that mothers know best. But why has each generation produced a different ideal of the perfect mum and how has that influenced the twin emotions felt by most mothers - love and guilt? Producer SALLY DOGANIS Series producer
