Last December, the Prince of Wales made his most furious attack yet on modern British architecture. Central to this theme was a 60s office block next to St Paul 's Cathedral, Paternoster Square. Now it is due for redevelopment. The Prince wants to see it rebuilt in a more traditional style appropriate for such a site. But an architectural competition has been held 'in camera'. As a result, arch-modernist Richard Rogers will be working with 'Masterplanners' Ove Arup. Until now, the Arup concept for Paternoster Square has been kept secret, but what they finally come up with will change not only London, but will influence the look of all Britain's cities.

Forty years ago, the biggest aeroplane ever built was taking shape in Bristol. The plane, the Brabazon, was nicknamed 'The Flying
Skyscraper' because, with a total wing-span of 230 feet, it was as tall as the newest, tallest New York buildings of the late 40s.
To complete the luxury trans-Atlantic Brabazon, the aircraft constructors had to build a giant hangar and an extended runway. This meant the demolition of an entire hamlet. It was a major controversy in 1947 but provided the foundations for Bristol's aircraft-building future, including Concorde. Narrated by Derek Robinson Photography DAVID SAUNDERS Director ROBIN INGER
