First of two programmes Success to the Railway
In 1898 one of Britain's best-loved branch lines was opened from Barnstaple to Lynton in north Devon; a 191-mile scenic trip that took one and a half hours.
The track was only two feet wide, the engines and coaches mere toys beside the main line trains, yet it was a real working railway.
It closed in 1935, killed by the motor car but it is not forgotten. Former passengers recall the magic of the railway with the help of photographs and rare film. Written and narrated by Gwyn Richards
