At the age of 12, Mark Hicks suffered a terrible fall from a tree which left him without the use of his arms and legs. Yet Mark developed a rare gift as, with paintbrush or pencil clenched between his teeth, he brought to life his dreams and nightmares in a series of vivid and haunting works of art. This is the story of a young man whose will and vision overcame the most terrible of handicaps. Gravity Is My Enemy won the 1977 Academy Award for the Best Documentary Short Subject.

Chinese Cinema
Film-maker and critic
Tony Rayns introduces two contrasting films from the Far East: a social comedy from China and a supernatural extravaganza from Hong Kong.
In the Wild Mountains starring Du Yuan
Yue Hong
In an isolated village in the mountains of Shaanxi Province, two couples find discord in marriage. Huihui, content to farm in the old way and deeply distrustful of his neighbour's innovative ideas, is shackled to an impatient, progressive wife. Hehe, always anxious to get ahead, finds no sympathy from his conventional partner. Yan Xueshu 's charming comedy of misalliance highlights the two faces of China today: deep-rooted peasant conservatism and individual enterprise.
