A year ago the Japanese company Komatsu moved into an empty factory just south of Newcastle. Their aim was to bring the Japanese work ethic to Britain. This series of three programmes looks at the challenges facing British and Japanese workers and management in the first difficult year of the factory.
3: Newcastle Brown
The British manager has been employed by the Japanese to bring morning exercises, uniforms and equal status to Newcastle. The workers he has to convince are Geordies, with a culture quite alien to that of Tokyo head office.
Over the year very British answers are tried to 'the Japanese way'. Reporter

This masterwork of post-war American cinema proved a landmark for RKO and a group of studio regulars. Combining elements of a nerve-wracking thriller with a portrait of a murderous anti-Semite, the film was the studio's most controversial - and commercially successful - of its year.
A soldier murders a Jewish war veteran and is misguidedly protected by some fellow soldiers out of loyalty. Meanwhile a dogged policeman determines that the crime will not go unsolved.
Sharp Chandleresque dialogue, atmospheric photography and fine performances all contribute to a powerful and compelling film.

This programme shows the destructive effects of light. Weak sunlight burns your skin, fades and rots your curtains and causes transparent plastic to craze or crack.
