A view of world history in 13 parts by JOHN ROBERTS 6: The Explorers
The Chinese and the Arabs were good sailors but it was the Europeans who embarked on the great voyages of exploration which were to lead, for a time, to the outright, if temporary, military and economic domination of the globe.
John Roberts describes how
Europe mastered the sea in the age of Henry the Navigator,
Magellan, Vasco da Gama and Columbus. What impact did they have on the people and exotic cultures they encountered? And what difference did it all make to Europe and to the way Europeans thought of themselves, to the mental map of mankind? 'It is unthinkable now, but for a time it was still possible to dream the dream of a world civilisation defined entirely in terms of the civilisation of the West.' Bitter and angry, some have survived by running away from society and living in the wilderness. Today hundreds of these veterans are still hiding in remote forests and mountains of North America. For them Vietnam is an unfinished business. They fear the violence in themselves.
