His Music and his World, 1685-1757
Written and narrated by David Thompson
The harpsichord sonatas played on historic instruments by Rafael Puyana
The tercentenaries of Scarlatti, Handel and Bach are all being celebrated this year. Over 550 of Scarlatti's sonatas are known and most of them were written for his pupil the Portuguese Princess Maria-Barbara. He was 43 when he travelled with her to Spain, and he was to remain in her service until his death.
The lively folk music of Naples, Portugal and Spain, the rich architectural heritage of Venice, Rome, Mafra, Seville, and the Spanish palaces of Madrid,
Aranjuez and La Granja , the landscapes, royal hunts and operas, are all reflected in some of the most engaging and spirited music of the 18th century.
