The Embassy
World Professional Snooker Championship from the Crucible Theatre,
Sheffield. Second day
Two of the trio of players in the Barry Hearn stable were competing in their first-round matches this afternoon.
TERRY GRIFFITHS (8) started out on the long trek of 17 days of tense, gruelling hours on the green baize to recapture the World Crown he won at his first attempt in 1979. If the seeding worked correctly, his opponent was that old campaigner
REX WILLIAMS. The other match this afternoon was TONY
MEO (10) whose best effort in the World Championships has been to reach the quarter-finals in 1983. If the form book is any guide, his opponent was either
JIM WYCH from Canada, or snooker's own entertainer,
JOHN VIRGO.
Also, the latest news of the matches involving ALEX HIGGINS (9) and DOUG MOUNTJOY (15), which started this morning.

The Embassy
World Professional Snooker Championship
DAVID TAYLOR (16) completes his first-round match this evening, but all eyes will no doubt be on the start of JIMMY WHITE'S (7) bid to win this title. After winning the Masters crown in 1984 he went on to reach the final of the World Championship, only to be beaten by Steve Davis. His form during the present season has been inconsistent but his fast, accurate potting will be the danger to his likely opponent, GRAHAM MILES. Introduced by DAVID VINE
