While winter lingers, indomitable ravens nest on the bleak mountain crags. In March, the lowland air brims with birdsong; by April, woods and hedgerows have a mosaic of wild flowers. Spring has arrived - the marvellous renewal - the cycle of life revived by the sun.

'Too operatic,' someone said in Leipzig, 'and too long!' One opinion of Bach's music, on his appointment to his last, longest and most famous post: Cantor of the City's Thomasschule ...
This film to mark the Bach tercentenary recounts the life of one of the world's greatest composers, seen from those Leipzig years and based on the records of the City Council, his employers. It's a story of Bach's fight to defend position, status, and, above all else, his music.

continues the season of films by one of Hollywood's greatest directors starring Gene Hackman, John Cazale

Harry Caul is a professional eavesdropper - 'the best bugger on the West Coast'. He is also an intensely neurotic man, obsessed by his work and his own privacy. Following a particularly difficult surveillance job in San Francisco, he believes a young couple are about to be murdered. Gradually Caul becomes enmeshed in a mystery even more complex and dangerous than he anticipates. Gene Hackman gives a magnificent performance as a man driven to near insanity in this hallucinatory work from an original screenplay by its director.

Motor racing's winter break has produced its usual crop of stories: Toleman's on-off season, Tyrrell's reinstatement, the Renault power struggle. But today, in Brazil, it's business as usual as 15 teams start out on an eight month long season.
A world-wide television audience of nearly 78 million will join Rio de Janeiro's excitable motor racing fans as some of the winter's questions start to be answered: can McLaren maintain their 1984 dominance, will Ayrton Senna live up to his reputation now that he's joined Lotus, and how will Brabham respond to the disappointment of last year? Murray Walker and James Hunt steer you round the 3.13 mile Jacarepagua course.
