The Embassy World Professional Snooker Championship from the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield First day
A year ago STEVE DAVIS began the defence of the World title he won in 1983 and went on to retain his crown. This morning history repeats itself as the World Champion and No 1 seed starts out to defend his title, more determined to win this year to make it a hat-trick in the most coveted competition in the world of snooker. His opponent today could well be a young player with aspirations of going to the top of the snooker ladder, as Steve Davis did a few years ago-NEiL FOULDS, a gifted player coached by his father Geoff, no mean player himself.
On the adjacent table the No 2 seed TONY KNOWLES starts his bid to take the title, but has not been hitting his best form throughout this season. On the seedings he should be playing the Scot, EDDIE SINCLAIR.
Also in today's programme, at 2.30 pm*, Snooker Break with the latest news of the championship and comments from the experts. Viewers are invited to write in with questions and requests during the tournament.
DAVID VINE and DAVID ICKE introduce coverage of the first nine frames of the best-of-19 frames in these first-round matches, where the top 32 players start the long haul over the next 17 days, with L300,000 of prize money at stake.

Fred Graham is to play the lead in a new show by Cole Porter -an up-dated version of The Taming of the Shrew. He casts both his ex-wife and his girlfriend in the other leading roles-only to discover their suitability for the parts of 'Katherine' and 'Bianca' is painfully obvious. Fourteen songs by the great Cole Porter helped make this show a hit on Broadway for two years, and throughout the world since its premiere.

Clifford and Jane Bingham 's garden has been designed for all-year-round interest but it is in the early spring that this third-of-an-acre suburban garden is at its best. With over 80 different cultivars of daffodils, alpines, unusual shrubs and plants and cymbidium orchids, the garden provides a riot of early spring colour. There will be advice on the growing and care of orchids, including the more hardy pleione and bletilla, and on the positioning and use of both traditional and equatorial sundials.

7: Richmond Park
It is a golden autumn day in Richmond Park - a royal park, and a sanctuary of 2,500 peaceful acres on the doorstep of London.
Pippa, Emma and Tufty, the squirrels, are being spoiled by Sally, a medical secretary. She feeds them expensive nuts.
The Nutcracker is rehearsed by the boys of the Royal
Ballet School. Two Japanese ladies hunt among the leaves for secret delicacies. Taxi drivers sneak into the park for a quick game of golf. Dogs are walked, pictures painted, model planes flown and bagpipes blown. And watching it all are the deer. Proud majestic creatures. It is, after all, their park....
