A year ago STEVE DAVIS began the defence of the World title he won in 1983 and went on to retain his crown. This morning history repeats itself as the World Champion and No 1 seed starts out to defend his title, more determined to win this year to make it a hat-trick in the most coveted competition in the world of snooker. His opponent today could well be a young player with aspirations of going to the top of the snooker ladder, as Steve Davis did a few years ago-NEiL FOULDS, a gifted player coached by his father Geoff, no mean player himself.
On the adjacent table the No 2 seed TONY KNOWLES starts his bid to take the title, but has not been hitting his best form throughout this season. On the seedings he should be playing the Scot, EDDIE SINCLAIR.
