An Inquiry into 'tax avoision and evadence'
Taxes make a nation of liars, said Gladstone. But these days no one has to lie - they just get themselves a good accountant and play it straight.
A checklist for tomorrow's end-of-financial-year deadline? Arrange a tax-free trip abroad, pay through the nose for a bed-and-breakfast deal, strip off a few dividends, wash a bond or two, and leave your roll-ups behind. Return to a tax haven - in rural England; and plant a forest - in wildest Scotland. Then, when you've minimised your income and maximised your gains, think carefully - and charitably - about your children's future and your retirement. Above all, be your own boss. And keep it all in cash! All perfectly legal, honest and very fruitful. But decent? James Bellini investigates the fine line between the legal-and-moral and the legal-and-immoral.
