Dr Priestley and the Breath of Life 1 August 1774: Dr Joseph Priestley , radical politician, theologian and scientist, adjusted the focus of his burning glass and discovered an unknown gas. That gas is now called oxygen-the breath of life itself.
Priestley was excited and puzzled by his discovery. Why did it keep mice alive? What happened when it turned blood red? How did plants make it when sunlight shone on their leaves?
Starting with reconstructions of Priestley's original experiments, Professor Ian Fells shows how we are still trying to understand the links between oxygen and living things which this remarkable Unitarian minister first demonstrated 200 years ago. Is oxygen connected with diseases ranging from brain haemorrhages in premature babies to rheumatoid arthritis in adults? And could we improve on the way plants make oxygen by also using sunlight to split water - and make cheap fuel?
