Following the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, the Earl of Southampton laid out Bloomsbury Square on land in front of his London house. This sort of development was an immediate financial success and was followed throughout the 18th century by a whole series of similar squares and streets on the then western edge of London.

The American Connection
A British company now owns more native American oil than any other. But to get that oil from the shores of the Arctic Ocean and into the great American marketplace, BP had to find an American partner.
This film is a portrait of that company, Standard Oil of Ohio. Even in the States most people had never heard of Sohio before the partnership. Now it's the most profitable sector of the BP empire. Just what does the American connection amount to? And how much say does the British parent have in Sohio's affairs?

A series of four programmes 2: Tsultrim's Family
Presented by Michel Peissel
In the remote village of Konchet, in the Kingdom of Zanskar, families live in the same way as their Tibetan ancestors more than 1,000 years ago. One of their two kings comes from a line that has ruled from the time of the Norman Conquest. The tales told by Tsultrim's grandmother span five generations. This is a medieval world where dogs turn into spirits at night, and bears and wolves are as much part of the landscape as the fleas and the lice.
