Fifth day
The Rise and Fall of a Persian Empire
Of the Seven Sisters, the giants who controlled the world's oil supplies for half a century, five are all-American, one is mainly Dutch. But one sister is British, through and through. She is British Petroleum, the country's biggest corporation by far and, as taxpayers, we own 46 per cent of the business. How did she manage to survive and grow rich in such a ruthless and predatory family? This, the first of nine films, traces the history of BP from its birth in the Persian desert, through its oil-rich days, to the Arab takeovers in the Gulf; and it introduces some of the men who must carve a future for the company.

A series of personal views from the Third World
The Wide World of Y. K. Pao
Thirty years ago Sir Yue-Kong Pao , an exile from mainland China living in British Hong Kong, decided, as he says, 'to go shipping'.
' My father said to me, " You have no knowledge of shipping. You may lose your shirt," but remembering the insecurity of life in China when I was a child, I decided only to invest in ' movable assets'. That's why I went on the high seas.'
Known to his friends as Y.K.', Pao is now the biggest independent shipowner in the world, bigger than Onassis or Niarchos. His story is also a story of the Third World, for he represents the new spirit of enterprise that has made South-East Asia the one real growth area in the Third World today. It could be argued that the future of this part of the world depends as much on his kind of initiative and business skill as it does on those who fight the cause of the poor and dispossessed.
