An Open Door programme made by Clown Cavalcade.
There have been clowns since time began because people have always needed a good laugh. Maybe it's something in the water, but the British have one of the oldest clowning traditions in the world. Clowns have popped up in palaces and market squares, theatres, opera houses, music-halls and circuses-they even found their way into the movies. But in these days of the recession where are the clowns? What price a good laugh?

10: Civil War
The Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 gave Ireland Dominion status as the Irish Free State, and the six counties of Northern Ireland the right to opt out. To die-hard Republicans of the IRA the Treaty, with its oath to the King as head of the Commonwealth, seemed a betrayal of all they had fought for against the British.
In the brutal civil war that followed - shown here on film and on the faces of survivors - families were divided, Michael Collins was killed in ambush, 77 IRA men were executed, and a bitterness was born that was to divide southern Ireland to the present day.
