James Stephens , founder of a secret organisation, later to be known as the Irish Republican Brotherhood, planned rebellion in the 1860s. Money and support came from Irish immigrants in America. But the Fenian rebellion of 1867, a series of unco-ordinated and spasmodic uprisings, ended in total failure. Yet the story of the Fenians was to capture the imagination of future generations and inspire the nationalists of the 20th century. The Fenian tradition lives on in today's IRA.

Bernard Levin talks to
Robert Burchfield
Editor-in-Chief of The Oxford English Dictionary, he has been variously described as the ' master lexicographer of our generation ' and ' the custodian of the English language '. He prefers to see himself as a marshaller of words, ' the study of which has turned out to be the central intellectual passion of my life'.
The publication of the fourth volume of his life's work, the supplement to The Oxford English Dictionary, is due in 1985. It will stand at two million words, and will have taken nearly 30 years to complete.

The Legacy of a Genius
Nearly a decade after Picasso death, the nature of his genius is still being debated. The task of assessing the vast body of work he produced has proved an enormous challenge to scholars and artists.
American art historian Robert Rosenblum gives a critical account of Picasso's career and his place in 20th-century art. Henry Moore , Anthony Caro , David Hockney , George Segal , Roy Lichtenstein and Matta comment on the ways in which Picasso has affected them. There are also contributions from Francois Gllot , Picasso's children and his biographer Ronald Penrose.

starring Gary Cooper with Charles Bickford , Ralph Bellamy and Rod Steiger as Major Guillon
General Billy Mitchell believed in the importance and future of air travel and the air force, particularly in the United States. So much so, that he was prepared to jeopardise his career and risk a court-martial. This gripping film, based on a true story, tells of Mitchell's fight for his beliefs.
