This outstanding showbusiness record reflects the talent of American lyricist Alan J. Lerner , who also penned the songs for Camelot, Gigi and Paint Your Wagon. Roses Grow in Byker Now
The neighbourly jostle of the close terraced streets of the New-castle community of Byker has gone. Today architects come from all over the world to admire what has taken its place - an inner city suburb of brightly coloured houses grouped in small tree-lined squares. Three years ago the camera recorded the bitter experiences of three women, Ethel, Nora and Jean, as they endured a long cold winter of delays and hardships, waiting for the council's scheme to be finished so that they could be rehoused. For two of the women that bleak period is behind them-they are content now. But for Jean the memories are taking longer to heal.
