During the First World War a small unit of Americans joined the battle in France, before their country's formal participation. They were known as the Lafayette Escadrille. This adventure film tells the story of some of the young men who formed that unit. It's a story based on the first-hand experiences of director Wellman, portrayed in the film by his son.

The progressive Prince Golitsyn is opposing the Khovansky, and using foreign mercenaries to further his ambitions.
