An Album of Memories
A hundred years ago this month - on 13 March 1881 - Tsar Alexander II of Russia was killed by an assassin's bomb. The Imperial Government blamed the Jews and the wave of pogroms which ensued started one of the biggest migrations in history as the Jews fled to Britain and America.
Many settled in Leeds, and tonight, in the first of two films, members of the city's 18,000-strong community bring to life the scraps of personal history that gave Leeds its Jewish tradition. Part 1: The flight from Russia; Life in the Leeds ghetto; The sweatshops Narrator JEFFREY SEGAL
(Part 2 is on Thursday at 7.45 pm)
