Streams of summer visitors to the western tip of England take in the spectacular coastal scenery, but few linger in the granite villages of this old tin-mining community.
Brian Trueman discovers that the local tin mine is expanding. But optimism is tempered by memories of a harsh past, as well as by the young who question the area's priorities for the future.
It is the celtic mixture of pagan and Christian in the midsummer celebrations that underlines the firm local view that 'this is Cornwall, not England'.

Voices from Silent Hands
Imagine being born into a world without sound - cut off from the noises of life, from music, bird-song and laughter. But worst of all, cut off from the sound of human voices.
One in a thousand children in Britain are born into just such a bewildering world. They are the children born profoundly deaf. For them, the spoken language we all take for granted is a foreign language which has to be learned by watching lip-patterns.
As an alternative to the daily struggle with English, many adult deaf choose a second language-one which uses handshapes and space instead of words and sounds. It's a rich and subtle language with its own grammar in space. Yet it's the subject of bitter controversy among teachers of the deaf, and banned in most schools. Some see it as a barrier to learning English - others as a vital first step. It is known as British Sign Language.
