Six voyages with Clare Francis Narrated by Laurence Olivier 1: The Edge of the Unknown
In this new series
CLARE FRANCIS Unfolds the story of now man laced and mastered the oceans and now needs them to survive. Each week sees a very different journey, and each journey signifies a stepping stone in our long relationship with the sea. Today in her own yacht Gulliver G, in which she first crossed the Atlantic alone, Clare Francis retraces the sort of voyage early sailors would have taken. In ships no bigger than hers, made of skins and laths and hollowed logs, with no aids to navigation, they risked the terrors of the spirit-haunted deep, the worse dangers of rocks and shoals. Why did they do it? What first drove man to the edge of the unknown?

A special presentation of Lindsay Anderson 's famous film starring
Malcolm McDowell with Ralph Richardson, Rachel Roberts, Arthur Lowe
The journey of a young man - an ambitious coffee salesman - across country, in search of success and wealth. Lindsay Anderson, using an idea from his star in If...., creates a surreal satire about a painful odyssey through the disintegrating Britain of the early 70s. One of the most engaging, yet paradoxically rancorous, films in the history of British cinema, it makes intriguing use of music and songs, written and performed by Alan Price. Tonight's presentation is of the director's definitive version, rarely shown since its initial release.

Lindsay Anderson 's film starring
A young girl leaves London, takes a train and heads for a northern industrial town. She boards a bus and takes a tour of the city. Is her search for a warmth and openness lacking in the metropolis? If so her journey ' home ' is strangely disturbing. Anderson's mixture of satire and concern, his blending of colour and black and white, anticipate the style of his later features, If ... and the epic 0 Lucky Man!
