' It's as fine a built town all of stone as may be seen, with several very good churches ... much finer than Cambridge ...'
And it's still the local limestone which Celia Fiennes saw in 1697 that gives Stamford its unity and essential character.
For many, especially before the by-pass was built, Stamford was a grinding traffic-jam on the old Al as the road followed a tortuous dog-leg course through the middle of the town - a course determined to this day by the site of the ancient Danish burh. But this lovely town, full of fine buildings, Was the first to be designated a Conservation Area under the Civic Amenities Act of 1967. It possesses five handsome churches, lovely houses splendid in carved ornament and detail, and roofs made <' the famous stone slates from nearby Collyweston. There's also an excellent collection of civic regalia and just across the River Welland stands Burghley House, William Cecil 's prodigious mansion set in a masterpiece of landscape designed by Capability Brown.

A film portrait to mark the 60th birthday of the distinguished American musician.
When he was a young and unknown musician, his mentor and friend, the great maestro Serge Koussevitsky , urged him to change his name. ' Leonard Bernstein ; it will never be on Carnegie Hall !' But only a few months later the world did see his name outside Carnegie Hall; he has since established an international reputation as a composer, conductor, pianist, teacher, tv lecturer and author.
Bernstein has always faced problems: his father's gloomy prophecy that he would spend the rest of his life playing Cole Porter songs in a hotel lobby now seems like a minor trauma compared to the years of hostile criticism he's received from critics and the avantgarde. All this in addition to the creative problems confronting any composer of talent.
In tonight's film from America, a world première, Leonard Bern stein talks about his life and his work. Extracts from many of his compositions are heard in rehearsal and performance by the ISRAEL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA.

Careering into Science
What does the world of science look like seen through the eyes of the scientists of the future?
Horizon invited three boys and three girls aged 15 and 16, from widely different backgrounds, to make a three-week journey of exploration through science and technology in Britain. Given an entirely free hand, they decided to investigate everything from the most monotonous assembly-line work to advanced research in lasers and particle physics. They interview engineers, nurses, deep-sea divers, botanists, biochemists and airline pilots about life-styles, motivations and money.
Like most teenagers, they have had very little careers guidance, and some had hardly ever been away from home before taking part in this project. They show us from a fresh point of view what the scientific life is really like.
