The Spirit of Carnival
Narrated by ELIZABETH BELL
The twin Carnivals of Rio and Trinidad, two of the most spectacular and gloriously pagan festivals ever to be celebrated in modern times. The Portuguese took the ' entrudo', a ritual last fling before Lent, to Brazil. The French took Mardi Gras to Trinidad. The African slaves in both countries gave it the spirit to survive for over 300 years.
Today Carnival lives on - a magnificent spectacle of fantasy and illusion, an explosion of soul-stirring samba and steel drums, and a deeply moving pageant in which thousands of people escape into a dream world of their own making.

Ten years ago today, half a million men, tanks and armour from Russia and her Warsaw Pact allies invaded Czechoslovakia and put an end to Alexander Dubcek 's brave experiment - to give communism a human face. For the few brief months of the Prague Spring, Czechs and Slovaks lived without censorship, and with a degree of political freedom that was unique in Eastern Europe.
Keith Kyle recalls the events of 68 to discover why the Czech experiment went wrong and reports on life in Czechoslovakia today, under the harsh regime the Russians have imposed.

A weekly series of visits to music festivals around the world. Festa in Montepulciano Hans Werner Henze's
International Workshop
Three years ago the composer Hans Werner Henze tried, with international artists and the Communist town council of Montepulciano, to bring back cultural activities which had been drained out by industrialisation. In this film, made at the birth of the event, HENZE recreates the atmosphere of enthusiasm and chaos which reigned. Including extracts from:
Il Palazzo Zoologico , an opera designed by local schoolchildren, directed by VOLKER SCHLÖNDORFF
Don Quixote, PAISIELLO'S opera re-scored to include a local brass band Il Turco in Italia, ROSSINI'S opera Concerts by Julian Bream Peter Maxwell Davies Gerald English
... cleverly structured film (OBSERVER) sparkling and thoroughly enjoyable
