HRH The Prince of Wales presents The Mick Burke Award to the winning cameraman in the expedition film-making competition. Last year six groups were selected by the BBC and The Royal Geographical Society and supplied with Super 8mm film equipment. The resulting films, often taken under considerable hardship, include the Doug Scott epic climb of the Ogre, life in a Yemeni village, a kayak voyage through ice-floes in Spitzbergen, a journey to the monasteries in Ladakh, India, and a Stone Age tribe in New Guinea. David Attenborough introduces the winning film in its entirety with extracts from four others.

A Haunted Man with
Thomas Hardy , famed as a novelist, deeply reserved and secretive as a man, put his most private feelings into his poems, and the greatest of these were the poems of love and remorse that he wrote after the death of his first wife, Emma. They had fallen in love in Cornwall and ended their days in a grim house outside Dorchester. The romance of their first meeting seemed far away ...

A series of films featuring the re-discovered work of amateur cameramen and ' home-movie' makers of the 20s and 30s.
Introduced by James Cameron
Among the most potent reminders of the pre-war world are the vanished technological dinosaurs; like the huge biplanes of the commercial airways, the Atlantic ocean liners, and above all the steam trains. Tonight's programme is made up of home-movies of all these giants and ends with the story of a small boy who dreams about a railway engine and wins one of his own.
