(THE HON MR JUSTICE PARKER, The Inspector, Windscale Enquiry)
Those words uttered last May heralded a unique public enquiry into the private world of nuclear scientists. It lasted for 100 days and examined a controversial application to build a nuclear reprocessing plant at Windscale on the Cumbrian coast.
Observers, witnesses, and objectors came from seven countries to take part. The perils of terrorism, proliferation, and radio-active pollution were measured against the planned safeguards and the rewards of nuclear energy supplies for the future. Now Mr Justice Parker is making recommendations to the Government on whether the plant should be built - or not.
Tonight's programme re-creates some of the confrontations and sketches in the remarkable background of the Windscale Enquiry. The dialogue is taken from the Official Verbatim Transcript of Proceedings. It was filmed on location in the Lake District and at Whitehaven Civic Hall where the Enquiry took place.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Introduced by Gavin Millar
Close Encounters of the Third Kind - with UFOs-was shot last year in Hollywood on a strictly closed set. No TV cameras were allowed in to see what Steven Spielberg , the young director of Jaws, was cooking-up this time. But Arena: Cinema sneaked in on the last day of shooting to watch SPIELBERG at work and to talk to him about the movie which looks like being the science fiction - science fact? - sensation of 1978.
