with Rene Cutforth
' They were on the wing - in flight from guilt. They flew on the wings of Peter Pan - they were determined not to grow up; or the wings of alcohol and cocaine - they were determined not to sober up; on the wings of speed, of sex, of the spirit of competition ... They never touched down until the final crash-landing in 1929.' Thus, in a highly personal account, RENÉ CUTFORTH sums up the spirit of the Twenties - the ecade which began in the shadow of the first Great World War and ended with the stock-market crash which plunged us into the Depression. These hectic years saw the start of commercial aeroplanes, bobbed hair, Noel Coward , the BBC and the Picture Palace.

This film was shot entirely in Soweto, the largest of the black townships. It looks at the way the blacks there entertain themselves, at the kind of black talent hidden in the township streets and shows the sort of programmes that they themselves would like to see when they get their own television channel. And very surprising much of the material turns out to be.
