Hawick v West of Scotland Introduced by NIGEL STARMER-SMITH
In 1974 Hawick became the first-ever Scottish First Division Champions. They repeated this success last year and a win today will virtually guarantee the hat-trick. In three seasons they have only suffered two championship defeats and these were both by today's opponents, West of Scotland. Each club supplies a number of players for the national side, not least of these Gordon Brown and Sandy Carmichael from West, and the new centre, Alastair Cranston , playing alongside his club captain Jim Renwick , for Hawick.

Just why is a work written so long ago still read today? And why has it been called the greatest historical work of modern times '? This special Chronicle programme looks at some of the themes of Gibbon's story. At the same time five historians and archaeologists of our own day take us to the splendid sites of Roman antiquity and show how modern research has thrown new light on the history which Gibbon tells.
