A Question of Trust
1 It's absolutely vital that whatever magic potions we are applying to the patient, the patient believes in them. If we were to lose the confidence of the patient, we'd have lost our greatest asset in medicine.' Most doctors would agree with the Professor of Obstetrics who said this. Trust in the doctor benefits the patient-but what safeguards does the patient have? Jennifer Carr , aged 30, trusted her doctor - and the treatment he prescribed made her blind.
In the USA attempts are made to solve the problem - but can the medical profession be controlled without being hindered? Lord Denning once said that a doctor who was held liable for every mistake, ' instead of getting on with his work, would forever be looking over his shoulder to see if someone was coming up with a dagger.' This view is fair to the doctor, but is it fair to the patient? Has the patient no other choice but trust? Narrator PAUL VAUGHAN
