The only hospital in the world which does heart transplants routinely is Stanford University Medical Center in the United States. It is also the most successful. Of 50 people alive today with transplanted hearts, 30 owe their lives to Stanford, and some of these have survived as long as five years. Stanford's success is no coincidence. The transplant technique first brought to world attention by Dr Barnard was actually pioneered at Stanford by Dr Norman Shumway.

Horizon visits Stanford to find out why it is so successful; to see how the operation is done; to follow patients as they recover and try to resume a working life.
