Narrated by Robert Hardy
The film is the story of Violante, governor of Siena for 14 years, who invented the Palio, a crazy horse race, hoping it would channel the passions of the Sienese away from political plots.
Two centuries later each city district enters its own horse, and ancient rivalry between districts remains as bitter as ever.

There was pageantry on Horse Guards Parade, open-air concerts in the park, steam engines in Battersea, and clipper ships in the Pool of London - how easily we forget. Words by john PUDNEY
