In the second of six lectures, Leonard Bernstein, Charles Eliot Norton Professor of Poetry at Harvard University, discusses Musical Syntax.

Using Chomskyan techniques of transformational grammar he digs beneath the surface to uncover the 'deep structure' of music. The point is made effectively and humorously by the performance of a 'prose' version of part of the first movement of Mozart's Symphony No 40, specially written by Leonard Bernstein and played by the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

An Amberson Video Production recorded by WGBH, Boston.

Malcolm Muggeridge pays tribute to six men whose lives spanned the story of Christendom - men of outstanding genius whom he sees as six characters in search of God.

St Augustine - who lived in the last twilight of the Roman Empire, yet who was confronted by problems very like our own. 'There will be an end to every earthly kingdom and if this is actually the end now, God sees.'

Few animals die of old age. Most are killed by other animals - professional hunters whose natural way of life is dealing death on a grand scale.
Tiny shrews, packs of wild dogs, our own domestic cats - all these have reached the top of their trade, and have developed their tools and techniques for killing. Yet animals such as lions and wolves are gangsters only in our eyes. And it is their highly skilled and selective killing which has actually helped to generate the richness of wildlife.
Nevertheless, there are problems in being one of nature's hitmen... and how do we fit into the Killing Trade?

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet has inspired many composers, among them Berlioz, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev.

The American conductor, Lorin Maazel, contrasts their versions and relates them to excerpts from the play, with Hazel McBride and James Bate as the lovers and Richard Mayes as Friar Laurence.

The programme ends with a performance of Tchaikovsky's Fantasy-Overture, Romeo and Juliet. The New Philharmonia Orchestra (guest leader Carl Pini) is conducted by Lorin Maazel
