Roraima - the Lost World
Roraima has always been a legend. It's a fabled mountain plateau guarded by jungle and swamp deep in the interior of Guyana, perhaps near the fabled Eldorado itself. It's believed to be a source of diamonds and gold, but fear of evil spirits prevented the Indians venturing near it. It's the mountain Conan Doyle envisaged in 1912 when he wrote The Lost World - a haunt of the monsters of prehistory. And since the dawn of time man has striven to find and climb the great mountain.
It rises more than 9,000 ft above sea level. It's the ' Mother of All Waters' - the birthplace of the Amazon, the Orinoco and Esquito rivers. Its forbidding eroded rock summit, its base surrounded by slime forests merging into the great rain forests teeming with snakes, scorpions and poisonous spiders, and its winds and mists have always guarded its secrets. But on 12 November 1973 the face of Roraima was conquered. This film is the story of the men who achieved it.
