A Close-up in Time
From its debut in 1940 the aim of this, America's oldest ballet company, has been to present the best of the traditional ballet repertoire and to encourage new and native talent. Now ranked as one of the great international companies, it is seen in close-up ' in this American documentary.
There are glimpses of class and rehearsals, interviews with dancers, with choreographers AGNES DE MILLE and ANTONY TUDOR, with LUCIA CHASE , one of the directors of the company. Above all, to represent the vast range of the repertoire, there are excerpts from Les Sylphides, Rodeo, Swan Lake, The River, Etudes and a complete performance of Antony Tudor 's dramatic ballet Pillar of Fire to Schoenberg's Verkldrte Nacht.
