Symphony No 8 Job

Ralph Vaughan Williams was born on 12 October 1872. On 12 October 1972 the Royal Philharmonic Society celebrated the centenary with a special concert. Sir Adrian Boult has been a champion of Vaughan Williams' music for over 50 years.
Job, written in 1930 and dedicated to Sir Adrian, is arguably Vaughan Williams' greatest work. This 'masque for dancing' is based on a series of illustrations by William Blake, some of which will be seen in the programme.

The Eighth Symphony was written during the early 1950s when the composer was over 80. Melodious and humorous, it is the least formal of his nine symphonies.

This week: Tug-of-war Children
When a marriage breaks it is the children who suffer and legal disputes over custody can be drawn out and bitter. But when the parents are of different nationalities the aftermath can be even more distressing.
Jeanne La Chard and a Man Alive film team have been following the trail of missing children-and parents - from London law courts to Italy and southern Sardinia.
In the studio Desmond Wilcox with the parents and the lawyers discusses the future of these unhappy children.

A second chance to see the highly praised series with the writer and critic John Berger.
Oil paint was invented around 1400 and with it painting became the ideal medium for the celebration of private possessions. John Berger questions the value we place on that tradition.
