This is the golden jubilee year of the Bentley. First built as a three-litre in 1919, the car soon dominated the racing scene at Brooklands and Le Mans, and won a reputation for speed and strength which survives to this day. What accounts for the Bentley's special hold on its admirers? Has its importance been over-rated? Why did the Bentley company crash in the 1930s? S.C.H. Davis recalls what it was like to drive a Bentley to victory. The President of the Bentley Drivers' Club, Stanley Sedgwick, speaks for the Bentley owner today; and, from his home at Shamley Green in Surrey, W.O. Bentley looks back over the stormy history of the car which bears his name.
