Richard Wagner - extravagant, ruthless, egotistical, a hypnotic personality - was one of the most controversial characters of the nineteenth century. The Siegfried Idyll tells the true story of his scandalous love-affair with Cosima, wife of his closest friend and disciple Hans von Bulow, during the years 1862-1870-years which take Wagner from poverty in Vienna to 'exile' in Switzerland, living off the bounty of the 'mad' King Ludwig of Bavaria.
The film was shot on the authentic locations-in Switzerland, at Wagner's villa with its magnificent setting on Lake Lucerne, and in Germany at Lake Starnberg.
