George Harris is among the biggest and most ruthless tycoons. He is about to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of his company by clinching an important take-over bid. But there is something about this day of all days which is not right. His secretary seems oddly dressed, the typing pool is deserted, and there is Bob Crane. He has come unannounced for an interview. Normally Harris wouldn't bother, but today he can afford to be generous. It turns out, also, to be the day he makes the biggest mistake of his life.

Horizon - Man and Science today
The farms and factories of the thrusting western nations have doubled and trebled their output in a decade. But many scientists warn that increasing production and increasing population threaten the world we live in. Waste products, already a nuisance in densely populated areas, could be a danger in the foreseeable future, poisoning the air we breathe and the water we drink.
A Horizon unit has filmed scenes in parts of Britain where pollution is a problem now, and a possible menace tomorrow. In the studio, representatives of science, industry, and government discuss their attitudes to these examples of an environment under attack.
