In the story chair, Alfred Leutscher

Do you remember Mr. Popalon, the funny onion man? He can be seen through the Play School window every day this week, and once again his bright ideas land him in difficulties.
The presenters are Beryl Roques and Terence Holland, and Alfred Leutscher will be sitting in the visitor's chair to talk about animals. He brings with him some of his own unusual pets-Cleopatra the toad, Alice the dormouse, and Archibald the duck.

The story of an American Trade Union.

"This nightmare record of sweat-shops and strike-breakers explains more vividly than any book the spirit of idealistic rage in which American unions were founded." (Kenneth Tynan)

This film, compiled from photographs and newsreels, follows the immigrants to 'Golden America' in the 1900s from the customs sheds of Ellis Island into the sweat shops, the coal mines, and weaving mills.

It shows how the immigrant garment workers built their Union in the first fierce wave of disillusionment and then traces their story through the Depression, the New Deal, and the Second World War to the present day.
