He has written critical studies of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Flaubert, Sartre and Camus, and novels such as The War at the End of the World, Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter, The Notebooks of Don Rigobertoand his latest, The Feast of the Goat. Better Get It in Your Soul
Brian Priestley continues his series exploring the work of composer, bassist and bandleader Charles Mingus. In 1960 Mingus organised an alternative festival at Newport, with drummer Max Roach. Mingus and Roach collaborated again in 1962 - with Duke Ellington - on a trio recording, Money Jungle. In the same year Mingus assembled a big band for an ill-fated concert at New York's Town Hall, but it was a new 11-piece group that provided the vehicle for his studio masterpiece of 1963, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. With contributions from John Handy ,
Roland Hanna , Dannie Richmond , Charlie Mariano , George Wein and from Mingus himself.

Ian McMillan hosts the showcase of new writing, performance and the best in global literature, featuring this week a newly commissioned work from Irish writer
John Banville. For The Verb he has written a new radio piece, Stardust: Three Monologues of the Dead, in which we hearthe voices of the astronomers Copernicus, Kepler and Newton. For Banville they are immortals and this piece captures them ruminating among the stars.
