In 1893 the music critic of Le Figaro said of Debussy that he was "provoking dangerous eruptions in the young composers of the future", eruptions that were to find their full force in works such as the opera Pelleas et Melisande and his only string quartet. Pierre Boulez once remarked that the latter succeeded in freeing the string quartet form "from rigid structure, frozen rhetoric and rigid aesthetics". Today he considers the extent of Debussy's radicalism. With Donald Macleod.
